Thousands of garment workers took to the streets of Dhaka on 7 January 2019 demanding a salary hike.
The workers blocked the roads and staged demonstrations in Savar, Uttara and Gazipur, demanding the scrapping of the wage board, which they called it biased.
As a result of these demonstrations in the prominent areas of the city, the traffic on the Airport road as well as the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway too got halted for several hours.
Early on Monday morning, the garment workers in Uttara assembed in front of their respective factories and started putting up barricades. It was difficult for the police to manage the crowd.
Reportedly, there was also an instance of workers setting up a bus on fire. Though there were no reports of any casualty in this case, around 15 garment workers got seriously injured in a separate clash with police at Hemayetpur Bagbari in Savar.
There were also reports of violence from Gazipur area. The clash between police and workers left several workers and policemen injured. However, by afternoon, police managed to disperse the agitating garment workers from the road. At some places, police had to fire tear shells to disperse the crowd.
The agitation has been continuing since 6th morning (Sunday) and there were reports of clashes between police and workers on Sunday too.
