In its efforts to ensure the comprehensive functionality of the Central Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) at the Savar Tannery Industrial Estate (STIE), the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) has submitted a proposal to the Industries Ministry.
The objective of this proposal is to activate a project that will address and enhance the operations of the CETP.
With an estimated cost ranging from Taka 500 crore to Taka 800 crore, the proposed project by BSCIC Chairman Md Mahbubor Rahman focuses on constructing a 200-acre solid waste management shed south of the CETP. Bangladesh’s decision to undertake this venture stems from a desire to maximize the benefits of the CETP, following an investment of Taka 565 crore over nearly a decade.
The CETP facility, which was handed over to the newly formed Dhaka Tannery Industrial Estate Waste Treatment Plant Company (DTIEWTPC) by the Chinese company responsible for its construction, now necessitates renovation or reconstruction due to its incomplete state. This transition occurred in July 2021.
The CETP construction started in 2013 but was handed over incomplete by the Chinese company to the DTIEWTPC. The chief of BSCIC holds an optimistic outlook on achieving operational status for the CETP and completing the construction of the waste management field within a two-year timeframe, contingent upon project approval.
