Sahib Singh, the four-year-old boy’s image is now viral on social media as he becomes Burberry Children’s first Sikh model.
The collection of back-to-school designs sees London-based Singh – who is signed with agency South Coast Kidz – striking a pose in a Thomas Burberry Bear puffer jacket worn over a cardigan and shorts.
People across the globe are reacting positively to this as Gundeep Singh Raheja, Global Senior Merchandiser, H&M Home and Niftian wrote on LinkedIn, “…Whosoever reads this might feel like, another Sikh boasting about the Ad but my dear friend, this concept of ‘inclusion’ needs to be talked about more and more, so that the younger generation understands the concept of ‘inclusion & diversity’ from us.
He further adds, “It’s a definite proud moment for all the Sikhs around the globe as this kid is a reflection of our younger self. As a kid, even I used to tie my head gear in a similar manner, but I remember there was a trend amongst my school mates to not look like this as they thought it does not make them look cool, but they were actually fearing inclusivity in longer run; had there been more emphasis of inclusivity it might have impacted and nourished the thought process of our younger self. More power to such concepts. It’s high time to rise above the stereotypes of colour, caste, gender and religion. Be one & Be inclusive.”
Herleen Chadhaa, Counselor & Behaviour Coach also writes that it is endearing to see such inclusivity. “#Sahib Singh wearing a patka (Sikh head covering for young boys) pose for an iconic brand #BurberryChildren collection, A British heritage brand,” Herleen said.
A Sikh model to endorse clothing for ‘back-to-school’ design is a giant leap from #Burberry and will definitely contribute to the wave of change mindsets. As they say, ‘In diversity, there is beauty.’
