Karnataka Silk Industries Corporation (KSIC) is all set to get second composite silk weaving factory in its premises in Mysuru. The factory to be set up at cost of Rs. 24 crore will house common facilities for silk-twisting, fabric dyeing, and common effluent plant for the benefit of weavers.
The factory is expected to come up on 10 acres of land at Belavadi on the outskirts of Mysuru. A fund of Rs. 5 crore has also been allocated to KSIC to set up the factory by the Government of Karnataka in its 2017-18 Budget.
Around 20-25 entrepreneurs from Mysuru and nearby areas have shown interest in the upcoming factory. The proposal to set up mega silk cluster in collaboration with Government of India also finds mention in the State Budget presented by the Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
“Karnataka has maintained its Numero Uno position in silk production in the country by producing 36,146 tonnes of silk,” said Siddaramaiah while presenting Budget in the Assembly.

It is pertinent to mention here that Mysuru and its surrounding regions are known for sericulture, and the famed Mysore Silk has been accorded the Geographic Indication tag in view of its uniqueness.
