Bangladesh University of Textiles (BUTEX) has marked its 14th anniversary with the theme “Empowering Textiles, Enriching Futures.” Established in 2010 as the College of Textile Engineering and Technology, BUTEX is the first and only specialised public university for textiles in South Asia.
The university’s roots trace back to 1921 with the establishment of a Weaving School in Dhaka. It has undergone several name changes and expansions, including the launch of a bachelor’s degree program in Textile Technology in 1978 and graduate programs in 2011. Currently, BUTEX comprises 11 specialised departments under five faculties, with plans to introduce two new departments shortly.
A formal event was attended by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Dr. Engr. Zulhash Uddin, faculty members, alumni, and students. The Vice Chancellor emphasised the importance of alumni engagement and announced the formation of an 11-member committee to establish a BUTEX Alumni Association.
Key figures from the textile engineering field attended, discussing the need for collaboration with textile organizations to enhance the university’s reputation. The day concluded with a cultural program and a concert in the university auditorium, with lunch provided for all attendees.
