Amid the ongoing heatwave across the country, the Directorate of Inspection of Factories and Establishments (DIFE) has released a notice highlighting adherence to rules concerning the temperature of the workplace and the supply of clean cold water.
The notice cited Section 52(2) of the Bangladesh Labour Act, 2006, and highlighted the need for appropriate preparations in every workplace to guarantee that workers may work comfortably in spite of rising temperatures.
It also emphasises the significance of preventing worker injuries, as stated in Rule 50(6) and Section 58(3). In particular, facilities for the provision of chilled drinking water in designated locations such canteens, dining rooms, and restrooms must be implemented in establishments employing more than 250 people.
Md Abdur Rahim Khan, inspector general (IG) of the DIFE, reiterated the importance of adhering to these clauses and related regulations across factories, shops, and establishments.
The directive aims to safeguard the well-being of workers during periods of extreme heat and ensure compliance with labour laws.
Confirming the directives, Shipon Chowdhury, deputy inspector general of DIFE, Chittagong, told the local media that DIFE inspectors are checking industries and other establishments to make sure the workers have access to cold water.
In order to successfully implement these steps and create a safe and supportive work environment for all employees, he asked all stakeholders to act immediately.
