According to the Industrial Police, approximately 85 per cent of factories across various sectors have disbursed the salaries for May to their workers as of 19th June.
However, around 15 per cent of factories were yet to fulfill their payment obligations.
Additionally, a staggering 98.45 per cent of factories have not provided Eid bonuses to their employees.
Eid-ul-Azha is expected to be celebrated later this month.
Among the 9,915 factories monitored by the Industrial Police, around 1,460 factories have allegedly neglected to compensate their workers for the month of May, disregarding the legal obligation to do so within the first seven working days of June.
Only around 154 factories have fulfilled their responsibility of providing Eid bonuses, leaving a substantial 98.45 per cent of factories yet to distribute them, as disclosed by the Industrial Police’s data.
In the major sectors, 2,023 apparel factories have paid May salaries, with 1,443 BGMEA factories and 580 BKMEA factories fulfilling their obligations.
However, 181 BGMEA factories and 119 BKMEA factories were reportedly yet to pay May salaries, and only 52 factories have paid salaries for the first 15 days of June, as per the Industrial Police.
Speaking to the media, BGMEA Vice-President Shahidullah Azim reportedly claimed despite challenges faced by entrepreneurs in managing funds due to reduced shipments, all factories were striving to ensure timely payment of workers’ salaries.
Meanwhile, the State Minister for Labour and Employment, Mannujan Sufian, has urged RMG factory owners to prioritise the payment of workers’ wages for the initial 15 days of June, along with festival allowances, ahead of the Eid holidays
