Textile mills across Tamil Nadu have urged the state government to reduce power tariff for high tension consumers, and consider separate tariff for the textile industry.
Maintaining that the price of fuels for power generation has reduced and power is also available under open access at a lower cost, Southern India Mills’ Association (SIMA) chairman M Senthil Kumar has stated that the power tariff should also be reduced.
As per recent power data, coal price has come down from Rs 5,399 to Rs 3,591 a tonne in the past couple of years. Furnace oil price, excluding Value Added Tax, has also reduced from Rs. 39.55 a litre to Rs 17.81, and HSD (High Speed Diesel) oil too has slid down to Rs 36.25 a litre from Rs. 51.70 a litre.
Tamil Nadu now has surplus power, although power consumption has increased by 33 per cent in the past five years. The state is in a place to meet all future power demand and still continue to produce enough power to meet its requirements for the industry.
