Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba — providing consumer-to-consumer, business-to-consumer and business-to-business sales services via web portals – may soon enter Bangladesh. This was stated by the Managing Director of business development for emerging markets at UCWeb, a unit of Alibaba Group, Siyuan Pi in Dhaka recently.

“We are collecting information about the Bangladeshi market, and will take a decision shortly,” said Siyuan Pi at the launch of UCWeb’s Bangla version browser, adding, “We are also offering online commerce for Bangladeshi people through the aliexpress.com site.” Pi also underlined that people can buy products through this site from China as well as other countries.
It may be mentioned here that Alibaba Group Holding Limited began in 1999, when Jack Ma founded the website Alibaba.com, a business-to-business portal to connect Chinese manufacturers with overseas buyers. Alibaba’s consumer-to-consumer portal Taobao, similar to eBay.com, features nearly a billion products and is one of the 20 most-visited websites globally.

Alibaba Group reportedly transacted US $ 390 billion in last year, and is reportedly planning to achieve US $1 trillion in sales in the next five years.
“A UCWeb survey found 37 per cent of users from Bangladesh prefer Bangla as their interface language,” said Marketing Director of emerging markets at UCWeb Catherine Huang.
UCWeb is said to be the leading mobile browser in four emerging markets: China, India, Indonesia and Pakistan.
“As far as Bangladesh is concerned, UCWeb’s popularity has been increasing rapidly and its daily active users grew 109.2 per cent in 2015,” stated Huang, adding, “Its current share in the Bangladesh market is about 30.34 per cent.”
