The formal opening of Sonnex Energie (Bangladesh) Ltd in Dhaka signalled the start of a strategic joint venture with the goal of building a 500 MW solar PV module manufacturing facility. The occasion highlights a significant drive towards green industrialisation, particularly in the ready-made garment (RMG) industry, which is progressively embracing renewable energy sources to improve sustainability and lessen dependency on fossil fuels.
The goal of this collaboration between Solar EPC Development Ltd, Bangladesh’s top supplier of turnkey solar solutions, and Sonnex Energie GmbH, a German business known for producing highly efficient solar modules and inverters, is to transform domestic solar production and installation. The project aims to enable Bangladesh’s RMG sector to shift to cleaner, more affordable energy sources in addition to producing high-quality solar panels domestically.
In order to build a trained workforce, the joint venture is currently concentrating on establishing automated assembly lines, cutting-edge testing facilities, and specialised technical training centres. To improve supply chain resilience and guarantee on-time delivery and support for major solar projects nationwide, the initiative also intends to set up regional logistics hubs and warehousing.
The venture’s initial phase will focus on market development in Bangladesh, with a particular focus on utility-scale solar projects and deployment in the Commercial & Industrial (C&I) sector—two crucial steps in incorporating renewables into the energy mix of significant sectors like RMG. With ambitions to grow up to gigawatt-level production by 2035, the long-term objective seeks to increase manufacturing capacity to 500 MW annually by 2028.
Eric, Managing Director of Sonnex Energie GmbH, and other notable guests from Huawei, Power China Bangladesh, Sungrow, GIZ, and Bangladesh’s Power Division were among the government and industry leaders who attended the event, highlighting the strategic significance of this industrial leap.
With more than 2 GW of yearly production capacity and knowledge of high-efficiency solar technologies, such as PERC, N-type, and smart modules, Sonnex Energie GmbH offers Bangladesh state-of-the-art manufacturing capabilities. They are positioned as a global standard for solar excellence due to their emphasis on automation and quality engineering.
The RMG sector in Bangladesh, which is aggressively working to include renewables to satisfy global sustainability standards, lower operating costs, and improve energy security, is anticipated to gain a great deal from this project. The joint venture intends to hasten the industry’s transition to sustainable energy by localising the production of solar modules and providing all-inclusive solutions, such as utility-scale project development, corporate power purchase agreements, and Capex and Opex models.
Sonnex’s investment aims to strengthen Bangladesh’s position as a renewable energy powerhouse in South Asia, enabling communities, homes, and enterprises to be powered by the sun’s transformative power as the country continues its commitment to a greener future.
