Designers are expected to move away from heavy outerwear toward lighter transitional layers, this season.This shift is described as “refined articulation”: cotton poplins, structured shirtings and smart layering that add dimension without bulk, and carry a wearer from warm afternoons to cool autumn evenings.
Styling examples show how this works in practice. A cropped, cinched-waist cotton short trench goes over linen pants and a lightweight cashmere cardigan. Usually cotton for layering is preferred because it is breathable and moisture-wicking. Outfits can then be built up as temperatures fall without overheating. The report also notes that summer linen can stay in rotation into autumn.
Structured shirting is the most direct match in Indian assortments. Nicobar’s Azara pants are cut from 100% cotton poplin with a paper finish, which gives a crisp, structured handfeel that holds its line through the day. Its side placket shirt is lightweight 100% cotton poplin, styled as a French tuck with trousers or denim. Bombay Shirt Company lists a cotton poplin striped shirt and soft-washed linen shirts; the brand describes its white poplin shirt as suitable for wearing inside a blazer or jacket. Khara Kapas’ Ziva top is cotton poplin with pleated balloon sleeves that add volume and structure.
Several labels also carry the lightweight jackets that sit over such shirts. Khara Kapas’ Get Underway jacket is an ivory straight jacket with a mandarin collar and three-quarter sleeves, made in 100% cotton mulmul. Ka-Sha’s Chacha is a cropped, anti-fit cotton jacket with appliqué stripes. Its Kochi is a hand clamp-dyed over layer in handwoven cotton, shown layered over a shirt. Doodlage’s Janet jacket is a short style with a front placket and patch pockets, made from upcycled cotton. On the high street, Rareism’s jackets collection includes lightweight layers alongside tailored blazers and coats. Fabindia consists of a black cotton jacket for women and a cotton quilted reversible jacket.
Linen and lightweight knits complete the layering set. Anita Dongre’s US site lists the Ardith Linen Kaftan at $400, along with an Ajrakh hand-block printed jacket set, and its Grassroot line lists a hand-embroidered kantha linen dress. For the cashmere layer, Delhi-based Pashma lists a silk-cashmere cardigan sold with a matching short-sleeve tee in its sweaters and cardigans range. The brand describes its summer knits as lightweight, wrinkle-free and breathable, alongside streamlined trans-seasonal styles.
Most of the pieces above are cotton, mulmul or linen. The forecast therefore points to assortment and styling decisions more than to new fabric development with the overlap being strongest in poplin shirting and cropped or boxy cotton jackets.
