Fall dressing often borrows from traditional workwear: barn jackets, chore coats and carpenter pants. This year, however, the industry sees “a shift to something much more refined,”. The utilitarian outdoor influences are evolving into an upscale, tailored countryside aesthetic. The vehicles are cotton checks and plaids, refined heritage fabrics and sharp tailoring.
The barn jacket is the anchor piece as it returns from its 2024 peak in new, into more refined silhouettes. Stylists say it works because of the contrast it creates within an outfit; the boxy shape, pockets and cotton canvas material, paired with a flowing dress or tailored trousers, make a look feel elevated and intentional. Product examples include Gap’s waxed canvas barn jacket, Avec Les Filles’ reversible scarf barn jacket and Levi’s houndstooth short mac. The report also recommends high-low pairings. One is a graphic sweatshirt with a loose, lace-trimmed skirt. Another is a slip dress under a wool cardigan, with worn leather ballet flats.
The closest Indian matches are the utility jackets and overshirts. Andamen’s Onyx overshirt is heavy-weight Indian cotton twill with two patch pockets, triple stitching at the shoulders and a concealed zip. Its Steel Blue version adds adjustable waist buckles and quilted shoulder patches. Nicobar’s Utility Jacket is 100% cotton in olive with roomy pockets, from its Safar collection. Rare Rabbit’s Rong shacket is woven cotton with a structured shirt-jacket shape, a spread collar and two flap chest pockets. The Bear House lists shackets in cotton, flannel and corduroy. Fabindia lists a neutral beige cotton-linen utility jacket, sold through Nykaa Fashion.
Checks and sharper tailoring are the second strand. Bombay Shirt Company lists an easy-care glen plaid checked shirt, plus banker-check shirts. Fabindia’s white cotton checks shirt for women is priced at. Nicobar lists the Dhauli kurta in grey-and-white checks, in a linen blend, at on its global site. Raymond’s suits and blazers range includes checked blazers and stripes, and it lists wool suits and linen blazers. Tweed jacketing fabric in checks is also sold unstitched, which suits the made-to-measure route.
Heritage fabric is where the Indian offer is most distinct. Ka-Sha’s Doma jacket is an oversized, front-open, hand-dyed cotton jacket, 41 inches long. Its Tass Thakur is a full-sleeve jacket in kala cotton, with chording and tassels. Doodlage describes a kala cotton line as handwoven, hand-spun and rainfed. Its Janet jacket is a short upcycled-cotton style with a front placket and patch pockets, and it also lists an Amelia denim trench. Khara Kapas makes its coats and jackets from pure Indian fabrics such as mul, khadi and cotton gauze. Its Get Underway jacket is an ivory mulmul style with a mandarin collar.
