The Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change’s adviser, Syeda Rizwana Hasan, recently had a fruitful conversation with representatives of the Bangladesh Garment Accessories and Packaging Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGAPMEA), under the direction of President Md. Shahriar. Environmental sustainability in the clothing accessory and packaging industries was the main topic of the discussion, which was held at her office.
Shahriar gave a summary of the state of the industry during the conference, emphasising the initiatives taken by BGAPMEA member businesses to use environmentally friendly production techniques. He said that several of the member companies run green facilities and have won awards for their environmental efforts around the world. Eco-friendly bags, biodegradable (BDP) bags, regenerated poly bags, and D2W oxo-biodegradable bags were among the unique goods that the companies displayed. Samples were shown and given to the advisor to illustrate their high calibre and environmentally friendly qualities.
The association’s president emphasised the importance of promoting these sustainable alternatives to single-use polybags, advocating for increased public awareness and acceptance. He proposed that eco-friendly bags be recognized as the “Product of the Year” to encourage broader market recognition. Additionally, Mr. Shahriar requested the adviser to facilitate communication with the Ministry of Commerce by sending a formal or semi-official letter on this matter.
A key concern raised was the potential impact of a ban on polybag production, particularly for factories solely focused on export, which could adversely affect export performance. The adviser expressed appreciation for the efforts made by local manufacturers in producing environmentally friendly products. She assured the delegation that the Department of Environment would minimize unnecessary inspections or interference in bonded factories.
The advisor also decided to start the process of switching polythene bin bags to compostable and biodegradable ones in the appropriate industries. In order to certify biodegradable, compostable, and other environmentally friendly products, she also suggested that BGAPMEA present a proposal to the government for the establishment of a specialised laboratory, either on its own or in partnership with the association.
