
According to Statistics Indonesia (BPS), from the start of the year to March, the United States surpassed South Korea and Japan in terms of Indonesia’s garment and footwear exports.
BPS chief Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti stated during a press release conference on 21st April 2025, that the United States remains the leading destination for Indonesia’s apparel and footwear exports.
Amalia listed three types of clothing and footwear products that are available for purchase in the United States. The first is HS Code 61, which includes knitted or crocheted clothing items and accessories. At 63.40 per cent, this commodity export to the United States is the largest of all commodities.
According to BPS statistics, as of March, the United States accounted for 38.62 thousand tonnes of exports of knitted garments and clothing accessories with HS code 61. In contrast, shipments to South Korea and Japan were much lower at 3.12 thousand tonnes and 3.30 thousand tonnes, respectively.
The exports of clothing accessories and articles of clothing that are not knitted or crocheted, or HS Code 62, come next. According to Amalia, Indonesia has a 42.96 per cent market share in exporting this item to the United States, with Japan and South Korea coming in second and third, respectively.
Since the start of this year, Indonesia has exported 17.70 thousand tonnes of HS Code 62 to the United States, followed by 4.28 thousand tonnes to Japan and 2.89 thousand tonnes to South Korea.
The same is true of footwear products, or HS code 64, which made up 34.16 per cent of all footwear exports from Indonesia.
