The Port of Mongla, which is the second busiest seaport of Bangladesh and is planned to be developed as a viable alternative to the Chittagong Port, which currently handles around 90 per cent of Bangladesh’s exports and imports including all-important apparel shipments, recently celebrated its 71st founding anniversary.
Speaking on the occasion as the chief guest, Secretary of Shipping Ministry Mohammad Mesbah Uddin Chowdhury, reportedly, stated the port’s capacity will be increased by four times within the next three years even as around 500 acres of land of the port have, reportedly, already been readied for the construction and extension of its jetty, bonded warehouse and yard.
Mohammad Mesbah Uddin Chowdhury, further praising Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her decision to turn the port into an active one, maintained the Government is working tirelessly to enhance the connectivity of the Mongla Seaport while adding that initiative has been undertaken to regular dredging in Mongla-Ghadiakhali, Pashur, Mongla and other channels to be anchored 9.5-metre draft foreign ships at the jetty.
