Water Saving in the Textile and Garment Industries (WaSaTex) initiative, led by GIZ in partnership with Reed Consultancy and Bangladesh (RCB) is spearheading water conservation efforts to help 50 suppliers of clothing brand H&M in Bangladesh. These suppliers, spanning knitting, dyeing, and finishing industries are aiming to slash their water usage by an average of 30 per cent.
This program includes training sessions using the ‘atangi’ platform with 7 selected training modules. These advanced modules are imparting knowledge about cutting-edge water-saving techniques, in-house process improvements and cost-effective solutions. The first batch of this sustainability initiative was held on 29th August 2023 at H&M office premises.
Bangladesh’s RCB will deliver services to three batches, consisting of up to 20 textile factories each, summing up to 55 factories. RCB’s nine seasoned experts, with over 15 years of experience in wet processing industries, will execute this training program.
GIZ initially received its mandate under the SCAIP project (Skills for Self-monitoring and Compliance with Clean and Fair Production in the Textile Industry) from Bangladesh’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), which further funnelled into WaSaTex. This project aims to improve the capacity of the Ready-Made-Garment Sustainability Council (RSC) in Bangladesh. Ultimately, this project will also support H&M in reaching its ambitious target of reducing their freshwater wastage.
