Urmi Group, a leading entity in the global apparel sector, has unveiled its Sustainability Report, outlining the company’s dedication to sustainable growth and its commitment to environmental and social responsibility.
The report showcases impressive achievements, including the generation of 9,517 GJ of renewable energy, a 35 per cent reduction in energy intensity since 2017, the recycling of 64 tonnes of fabric waste, along with the conservation of 236 mega litres of blue water.
Key Highlights from the Report:
Clean Energy Initiatives: The company has implemented seven clean energy projects, achieving zero detection of harmful substances in ZDHC wastewater tests.
Sustainable Materials: Urmi Group has prioritised the use of sustainable materials, with 54 per cent of its yarn sourced from Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) cotton and 3.8 per cent from sustainable man-made cellulosic fibres (MMCF). Together, these materials account for over 61 per cent of the total 11,657 tonnes of yarn used, while the remainder consists of conventional cotton, virgin polyester, and various blends. This commitment supports Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 12 and 13 by advancing circularity and reducing reliance on virgin resources.
Community Programs: The company has appointed 89 employees with disabilities and established childcare facilities. Initiatives include occupational health and safety programs, fire safety training, a physiotherapy center, and the distribution of free sanitary napkins.
Empowering Employees: Through comprehensive training, fair community practices, and diverse employment opportunities, Urmi Group aims to empower individuals and uplift communities. Compliant with the Bangladesh Labor Law (2006) and its internal policies, Urmi Group prioritises employee well-being through insurance coverage and workplace rights awareness programs. From 2021 to 2023, the workforce increased from 13,111 to 14,157, with women representing 6.6 per cent of leadership roles.
