In a historic development, the Second Committee of the United Nations General Assembly unanimously endorsed Bangladesh’s landmark resolution, titled ‘Natural Plant Fibres and Sustainable Development,’ as announced by the foreign ministry.
Adopted recently, the resolution calls upon member states to advocate for the sustainable production, consumption, and utilization of natural plant fibres in the pursuit of sustainable development.
It underscores the need for political support, resource mobilisation, capacity-building, and effective management to galvanise efforts for the sustainable use of natural plant fibres at global, regional, national, and local levels.
This unanimous backing reflects the international community’s acknowledgment of Bangladesh’s steadfast commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development, particularly through the thoughtful and sustainable utilization of natural fibres such as jute, cotton, and sisal, according to a ministry spokesperson.
