The readymade garment (RMG) workers’ minimum wage board has received approximately 200 objections and suggestions from both factory owners and workers regarding the recently announced Taka 12,500 minimum wage.
While workers are advocating for an increase in the proposed minimum wage, factory owners are pushing for a reduction in the amount.
Additionally, the board has received letters from civil rights campaigners, Transparency International Bangladesh, and the Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust, recommending a review of the proposed minimum wages to align with International Labour Organization standards.
The draft proposal, announcing Taka 12,500 as the minimum monthly wage for RMG workers, was published by the board on 11th November through a gazette notification.
Stakeholders were invited to submit written objections or suggestions within 14 days.
As of Wednesday, the board has received over 200 objections, including 168 letters from garment exporters and around 30 from various trade union federations.
