With the joint efforts of the Union Ministry of Textiles (MoT) and Nagpur central jail (Maharashtra), around 60 prisoners of central prison will get one-and-half-month-long skill-based training in the textile sector.
These inmates, also including 20 women will get a stipend of Rs. 300 per day.
The initiative is under the project ‘Samarth’ which revolves around skill development and assistance.
It is being said that MoT has also extended assistance to ensure inmates get loans ranging from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 10 lakh so as to set up their own manufacturing unit once they are released from the prison.
The proposed training sessions with experts from the Ministry of Textiles would help inmates master skills of manufacturing mats, bedsheets, bed covers and other such textile-based products.
Anup Kumar Kumre, Prison SP said, “We already have a weaving section in jail where a few inmates have been engaged in production. Those inmates have been included as candidates along with others who have a record of good behaviour.”
“Weaving skills can help inmates generate adequate income to sustain themselves and their families,” he added.
