The National Board of Revenue (NBR) Chairman, Md. Abdur Rahman Khan, highlighted the board’s dedication to supporting the government’s efforts to establish a corruption- and discrimination-free Bangladesh on Monday, stressing the significance of working together with all stakeholders.
Following the official opening of the new e-Return Service Centre at the NBR Bhaban in Agargaon, Dhaka, Rahman made these statements at a news conference. Michal Krejza, Head of Cooperation at the EU Delegation to Bangladesh, accompanied him for the official opening of the new service centre.
In response to a question, the head of the revenue board recommended taxpayers to utilise the SIM card on their mobile phones as a biometric when submitting their taxes online.
Out of the 1.04 crore taxpayers in the country, he said that 44 lakh of them usually file their taxes. When asked about the steps the NBR has taken to prevent tax evasion, Rahman responded that capacity is important because everything cannot be handled at once.
He said that the necessary preparations take time, and the battle against significant tax evaders has just recently started since the formation of the interim government, in reference to the success of tax zones in their efforts against them.
The head of the revenue board said, in answer to a different question, that the NBR has a reputation issue since it routinely selects which tax files to look into in-depth, which makes the process less impartial.
