The 2023 International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) Global Rights Index released recently has placed Bangladesh amongst the worst 10 countries for the 7th time in terms of workers’ rights.
This is as per reports, which underlined the nine other countries that are included in this list (for working people) in 2023 are namely Tunisia, Philippines, Belarus, Ecuador, Egypt, Eswatini, Guatemala, Myanmar and Turkey with Ecuador and Tunisia being the new entrants in the list in 2023.
Meanwhile, Labour Secretary Md Ehsan-E-Elahi has opposed the report, which has put Bangladesh’s rating as 5 indicating no guarantee of rights for the workers, even as he termed the ITUC observation (on Bangladesh) incorrect.
The ITUC Global Rights Index serves as a comprehensive global evaluation of trade union and human rights, providing a categorization of countries based on their labour rights status, taking into account regressive legislation, hindrances to union establishment, and instances of violent assaults on workers perpetrated by law enforcement authorities.
