The ninth edition of the 2022 ITUC Global Rights Index, which evaluated and ranked 148 countries based on their adherence to worker rights, has identified major garment-producing hubs including Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Turkey as the most challenging countries for working people.
As per the index, which serves as the sole database of its kind providing an in-depth review of workers’ rights in terms of legal frameworks, Bangladesh faced allegations of regressive laws, barriers to union formation, and incidents of police violence while Turkey, on the other hand, has been named for its repression of strikes, arrests of trade unionists, and systematic dismantling of unions.
Commenting on the report, ITUC’s General Secretary Sharan Burrow highlighted workers were facing multiple crises, as highlighted by the 2022 ITUC Global Rights Index.
Burrow has further emphasised the necessity of a new social contract that prioritises working people and restores their central role in the economy.
