To support sustainable forest management while also preserving biodiversity, forest certification organisation PEFC has called upon fashion brands to embrace responsible forest sourcing practices.
A newly released whitepaper by PEFC titled Enhancing Sustainability through Forest-Positive MMCF Sourcing: A Guide for Fashion Brands and Retailers, emphasised the significance of sustainable forest management while providing valuable insights on how to incorporate sustainable practices into the sourcing of man-made cellulosic fibres (MMCFs) within the fashion industry.
The whitepaper brings back attention to the environmental and social risks in forests even as it offers insights into PEFC’s approach that mitigates these risks and also promotes sustainability.
By adopting this holistic approach, fashion brands can contribute to forest preservation and promote sustainability.
In addition, the whitepaper presents practical solutions for brands to establish traceability of MMCF materials, which will enable them to make credible and verifiable claims regarding responsible sourcing practices for feedstock.
At the release of the whitepaper, the textile program lead of PEFC International Julia Kozlik expressed her enthusiasm even as she recognised the need for responsible sourcing in the fashion industry.
Julia opined fashion brands can make informed decisions, contribute to sustainable forest management, and preserve biodiversity by leveraging the paper’s insights.
