The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has recently decided to halt any new recruitment until the ongoing unrest by existing workers in factories comes to an end.
Reports claimed this adding the resolution was reached during a meeting held at the BGMEA office in Uttara, Dhaka, with BGMEA President Faruque Hassan presiding over the session.
The meeting also saw the participation of Atiqul Islam, Mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation, and Abdus Salam Murshedy, a lawmaker and former BGMEA president.
In addition to the moratorium on new hires, BGMEA leaders directed member factories that have been subject to vandalism to file cases with nearby police stations.
The directive specified the inclusion of names of responsible workers where possible and, if names are not available, to accuse unnamed individuals.
Member factories were urged to collect photos of demonstrating workers from video footage before filing these cases.
Concerning workers not being at their workplaces and engaging in agitation, the BGMEA leaders empowered factory owners to shut down their units under Section 13(1) of the labour law, invoking the principle of “no work, no pay.”
BGMEA leaders also instructed members to gather video footage capturing instances of vandalism and worker demonstrations.
