The high-profile steering committee members of the Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh will soon hold a meeting with the Government to discuss the extension of its tenure in the country.
A source closely associated with the process told this to reporters in Dhaka on Thursday.
The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and labour rights groups are also expected to participate in the discussion.
The source, requesting anonymity, underlined that in the said meeting Accord would provide the latest status of their activities in the RMG sector of the country.
Additionally, Bangladesh’s preparedness and capacity to take over the monitoring and remediation process after June 2018 will also be discussed.
The source also maintained that the platform of European buyers and retailers would also deliberate on the progress of National Tripartite Plan of Action (NTPA).
The NTPA has reportedly made less than 20 per cent progress in the area of factory remediation.
The quarterly meeting of the steering committee of Accord is also expected to be held between October 16th and 18th in Dhaka this year, further told the source without divulging details pertaining to the same.
The BGMEA and Accord held a meeting in Paris last month. The concerned parties had agreed to start an efficient transition process to ensure a sustainable scenario in the Bangladesh garment industry.
“We will work towards an agreement on the conditions under which the Accord would be able to hand over its functions to a national regulatory body on the basis that until such conditions are met the Accord will continue to operate,” the BGMEA maintained in a declaration over the Paris meeting.
