The Tirupur Exporters Association (TEA) has urged the Tamil Nadu government to build the proposed territorial division of commercial taxes at Tirupur considering the current and future business potential of the city.
In a press statement issued on Tuesday, November 13, Raja M Shanmugham, President, TEA cited that the State Government had proposed to form a new Territorial division of Commercial taxes by including Tirupur, Erode and Karur areas and making Tirupur as Headquarters.
The President further elucidated that “currently, the Knitwear sector turnover of Tirupur is Rs. 42,000 and it has set a target to reach Rs. 1 lakh crore by 2022, with the majority (80 per cent) of the business contribution coming from Tirupur from Small, Medium and Micro enterprises, comprising of 8,350 units.”
Apart from this, the spinning mills are also in operation in Tirupur and Palladam area. Raja M Shanmugham also marked out that “the approximate number of registered dealers are more in Tirupur area as compared to Erode area.”
Considering the existence of MSMEs Knitwear units and the future definite growth of knitwear sector, the President has sent a requisition letter to Thiru. K. C. Veeramani, Hon’ble Minister for Commercial Taxes and Registration, Government of Tamil Nadu and Dr. T. V. Somanathan IAS., Principal Secretary Commissioner of Commercial Taxes to announce Tirupur as a headquarters for the envisaged new territorial division of commercial taxes.
