China-based textile company Wuxi Textiles is all set to build a textile manufacturing factory in Dire Dawa Industrial Park (DDIP), Dire Dawa, Ethiopia. It will invest US $ 220 million in the plant, which will occupy 40 hectares of land.
The Chinese firm already has one project underway in Adama town of Ethiopia and this new venture in Dire Dawa is an extended investment to capitalise on cotton availability in the country.
The first phase of the textile manufacturing facility’s construction will see the investment of US $ 80 million. The complete setup of the textile plant is expected to take 30 months and, once operational, it will generate 3,000 jobs in the Ethiopian textile industry.
It may be noted here that DDIP is being constructed by the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) with the financial help from the Ethiopian Government. The park is projected to be a major FDI source for the emerging textile and garment industry of Ethiopia.
A cornerstone laying ceremony of the textile plant was held recently which marked the presence of Ibrahim Usman, (Mayor, Dire Dawa); Liu Yu (Economic and Commercial Counsellor, Chinese Embassy in Ethiopia); Tadesse Haile (Economic Plan, Monitoring and Support Sector Deputy Head with the Office of the Prime Minister); and Fitsum Arega (Investment Commission Commissioner).
