British multinational retailer Tesco has announced to cut 1,700 jobs to improve efficiency and simplify its operational structures. The cuts will be made both in the UK and in its international business.
However, the company has decided to support them to get alternative roles within the business wherever possible.
Changes in terms of managerial level positions are to take place. The role of People and Compliance Manager will no more be valid at Tesco’s stores and fulfilment centres. Customer Experience Managers, currently deployed at 226 Tesco stores, are equally announced to take the backseat.
All these are aimed at making line managers more accountable for responsibilities related to colleague and customer experience.
Tesco knows for a fact that these changes will be quite difficult to be fully implemented. What is keeping them to move ahead is the business competitiveness and future prospects. “We have initiated such changes to offer hassle-free experience to our colleagues and customers while at work or shopping as it will remove complexity,” said Matt Davies, Tesco UK and ROI CEO.
The changes will affect 1,700 employees, who will be supported to find alternative roles within the business wherever possible. In compliance to this step, the company is equally focused to support those affected by the changes. It is hopeful that majority of them will be quickly retained with 900 new roles and openings in store. There are already various positions at its distribution, stores and fulfilment centres reserved for reappointments.
New positions include roles of People Partners, Learning Partners and Colleague Relations Partners and that of Colleague Administration, which takes care of management teams in each large store. Fulfilment centres have also been created for the same purpose.
Tesco employs about 460,000 staff internationally, of which 300,000 are from the UK.
