India Post is all set to get the new khadi-uniform experience, following the footsteps of Air India One, which is the official aircraft of the president and the prime minister. This airline has made khadi outfits mandatory for its cabin crew aboard.
Postal department, the backbone of the country’s communication has come to the decision that 62,000 khadi outfits will be designed by the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) professionals, which comes to an approximate cost of Rs31 crore. Women will be given pairs of salwar kameez, designed for a chic look, while the men will get two sets of shirts and trousers. Sweaters will also be given for winter months. These uniforms will likely be khaki-coloured and made of khadi.
With an annual uniform allowance of Rs 5,000 each, postman/postwoman working for India Post would be spending the same amount on making the two sets of clothes yet to be distributed. One can expect to see the letter-carriers in their new outfits as early as February.
Khadi Village Industries Commission (KVIC), a subsidiary of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Ministry of India, has been urging various organizations and state government to dress their staff in khadi uniform once a week so as to help khadi weavers.
On similar lines, around 4 lakh employees associated with IT companies in Hyderabad (India) have recently decided to wear handloom clothes every Monday at their workplace to help weavers’ families.
This inspiration comes from our Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The PM has been appealing for more people to adopt khadi since he first took office and he has now convinced takers in the postal department.
