British fashion and home retail company Marks & Spencer has announced to set up a new logistics centre for its clothing and homeware segments in the year 2019. The upcoming facility will be spread over an area of around 495,000 square feet.
The mechanised distribution centre will come up in Welham Green (Hertfordshire) and will be set up as a part of the company’s five-year transformation plan. It will serve 150 stores in the South East.
The site, where the new centre will be built, was earlier owned by Tesco and now it will be operated bya third-party logistics supplier. Over 500 new jobs will be created in the region once the facility becomes operational.
M&S has not disclosed anything on the expenditurethat may go into making this project a reality.
Furthermore, the retailer has also announced to end operations at its Neasden distribution centre in North London which may lead to axing of around 400 employees who are working there currently. The work will be transferred to other sites in the M&S network.
The company, at present, has a network of 19 distribution centres and warehouses.
“We are changing and transforming our stores and supply chain to better serve our customers,” said Gordon Mowat, Director of Clothing & Home Supply Chain & Logistics, while commenting on the opening and closure of the warehouses.
