As part of a larger organisational change, Decathlon Canada has announced that the majority of its stores in Ontario, including five in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), will be closing.
According to the French sporting goods retailer’s website, stores in Brampton, Burlington, Markham, Scarborough, and Vaughan will close by the end of summer 2025.
Decathlon Canada has announced a significant retail pullout. The company entered the Ontario market with long-term expansion goals. The corporation acknowledged that the closures are planned to take place throughout the summer, but it did not provide a specific date for when each location would close.
Decathlon Canada has not revealed the number of affected employees or the potential for internal transfers to the remaining locations. Additionally, the corporation has not said whether it plans to focus its activities in other Canadian provinces or whether similar closures will occur in other jurisdictions.
According to a statement from the company, Decathlon Canada is still assessing its operations to make sure they are in line with long-term objectives and consumer demand.
The five affected establishments are all situated in high-traffic retail centres in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Decathlon’s decision to leave these areas is a reflection of the larger difficulties foreign merchants have adjusting to cutthroat local marketplaces.
The athletic goods company, which debuted in Canada in 2018, is renowned for providing a large selection of gear and clothing at affordable prices. Since then, it has spread to a number of provinces, although it has apparently encountered difficulties because of local rivalry, retail overhead, and consumer purchasing patterns.
