Amazon plans to invest US $ 26 billion in India by 2030 despite the fact that Walmart is becoming a more formidable rival. After CEO Andy Jassy met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to the US, the company made that declaration.
Jassy did not provide specifics regarding the company’s spending strategy, although it was previously reported that Amazon Web Services was investing US $ 12.9 billion in the nation and US $ 6.5 billion to expand its Indian eCommerce business.
Amazon’s increasing investment comes at a time when Walmart, a competing company, is relying on India, notably its e-commerce platform Flipkart and payments service PhonePe, to help it achieve its objective of tripling its foreign gross merchandise volume to US $ 200 billion in five years.
“It is not crazy to think that both those businesses could be $100 billion businesses in the future,” Walmart Chief Financial Officer John David Rainey said at an investors conference earlier this month.
Due to Flipkart, which held a 48 per cent market share in India, Walmart surpasses Amazon in e-commerce sales in India.
The discounted resale merchandise app Shopsy from Flipkart, which Walmart reported earlier this year had tripled its unit, customer, and seller counts over the previous year, is growing both numerically and geographically throughout India. There have been 175 million downloads of the app.
