At the India pavilion at Nor-Shipping, a prestigious international maritime event in Oslo, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) Sarbananda Sonowal announced that India has committed US $ 20 billion for infrastructure development aimed at improving multimodal logistics, port connectivity, and trade facilitation.
India’s expanding maritime capabilities, such as its advantageous policy-induced investment climate, demonstrated shipbuilding strength, circular economy initiatives, and creative financing plans to boost sectors growth, were underlined by Sonowal during the session.
“India is making significant progress towards the objectives of Viksit Bharat and Atmanirbhar Bharat under the capable and inspiring leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. These objectives see India as a contemporary, independent, inclusive, and internationally active economy. The marine industry plays a key role in this process, not just as a development engine but also as a facilitator of sustainability, resilience, and strategic linkage. India has started extensive initiatives to integrate logistics systems, build out port infrastructure, and make it easier for the private sector to do business. Stronger cargo flows, improved port efficiency, and growing investor confidence are already results of these measures,” Sonowal said.
Additionally, he emphasised the importance of bolstering maritime supply chains and connectivity through key corridors such as the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), the Eastern Maritime Corridor (EMC), and the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC).
