Workers at the Hamco Leathers Limited shoe factory in Kaliakore, Gazipur, voiced their grievances through a protest, urging the implementation of the new Government-announced salary structure.
Media reports claimed this adding the workers, facing financial challenges with the current payment rates, peacefully concluded their demonstration after police intervention even as discussions are set to take place involving both workers and owners to address the salary-related concerns.
The protest, occurring from 12:30 pm to 3 pm on Sunday, reflected dissatisfaction among workers regarding the existing payment framework even as they asserted that the employer has not adhered to the new salary grades, persisting with the previous amount of Taka 7,000.
In the context of soaring commodity prices, workers highlighted the insufficiency of this salary, making it difficult to meet essential needs, support their families, and cover education and medical expenses.
Urgency was emphasised for a salary increase to cope with the rising cost of living.
Meanwhile, Saniul Islam, the manager of the Human Resources and Administration Department at Hamco Leathers Limited, reportedly clarified that the clothing industry should not be compared to the shoe industry even as he underlined that they have already increased the salary by Taka 1,200, prioritising the well-being of the workers, and expressed their commitment to align with the Government’s officially published salary structure.
