
A CyberMedia Research (CMR) survey sheds light on the preferences of Indian consumers when it comes to online shopping categories, with a staggering 62 per cent of shoppers saying they prefer to use online retailers to buy apparel and accessories. The popularity of e-commerce platforms in the fashion industry demonstrates the convenience and selection that online shopping provides for the purchasing of clothing and accessories.
According to the survey, Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities are quickly catching up to Tier-1 in terms of the amount of time spent online shopping. Online shopping takes up about 16 per cent of consumers’ weekly income and takes up an average of 2 hours and 25 minutes per week in Tier-2 and above cities.
In May 2023, research on CMR Consumer Aspirations and eCommerce in Bharat was carried out. A total of 3006 consumers from different cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Bhubaneswar, Nagpur, Coimbatore, Lucknow, and Guwahati, were included in this study.
Tier-2 and Tier-1 consumers spent almost the same amount on online purchases during the past six months, at an average of Rs. 20,100 and Rs. 21,700, respectively.
Mumbai consumers spend the most on online purchases, on average Rs. 24,200, taking the top rank in terms of average spending. Coimbatore and Nagpur closely follow with comparable growth trends and average spending of Rs. 21,600.
Competitive prices, which 57 per cent of respondents found to be attractive, are the main factors that encourage people to shop online. Furthermore, 49 per cent of consumers are persuaded by enticing offers, while 57 per cent consider the ease of return and exchange procedures to be an important factor.
The growing generation of consumers in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities and beyond, has been able to increase their online purchasing and realise their aspirations thanks to the vast selection, convenience, and ease afforded by e-commerce.
