Quarter-zip sweaters are moving beyond their long-standing association with golf, corporate wardrobes and performance wear to emerge as a notable knitwear silhouette for Fall 2026. Once primarily functional, the zip-neck sweater is being reworked through softer knits, relaxed proportions, richer colours and more fashion-led styling. Its position between knitwear and casualwear also allows brands to interpret the silhouette across multiple categories.
The shift is closely linked to the wider return of preppy dressing. Quarter-zips and their closely related half-zip counterparts bring elements of collegiate and American sportswear into contemporary wardrobes, but the current interpretation is more relaxed than traditional country-club dressing. The silhouette is increasingly being paired with loose or straight-leg denim, tailored trousers and layered T-shirts, while oversized proportions bring it closer to contemporary streetwear.
International fashion has further pushed the shape into fashion territory. Chanel’s Métiers d’Art 2026 presentation featured a camel quarter-zip sweater styled with relaxed denim, while Miu Miu has explored zip-front knitwear in its recent collections. At the same time, the construction’s adaptability has helped broaden its appeal. Worn fully zipped, it creates a clean mock-neck effect; left partially open, it takes on a more relaxed, polo-like appearance. This makes it particularly suited to transitional dressing and layering.
The trend is also visible across the Indian market. Rare Rabbit has offered a Knitted Quarter-Zip Sweater, while Mischief Monkey has carried styles including its Men Half Zipper Cotton Sweatshirt. Boldfit has taken a more performance-oriented approach with its Half Zip Mens Sweatshirt Fleece and Half-Zipper Sweatshirt for Men. Next has also incorporated the silhouette across its menswear assortment through products including the Regular Fit Quarter Zip Sweatshirt and Quarter Zip Textured Funnel Sweatshirt.
The construction is being translated beyond conventional sweatshirts as well. The Bear House has developed multiple half-zip polos, including its Olive Regular Fit Solid Polo with Half-Zip Closure and Cotton Waffle Textured Regular Fit Half-Zip Polo T-Shirt. Powerlook has explored the format through its Brown Embroidered Quarter Zip T-Shirt, while Campus Sutra, Mast & Harbour, Roadster and Flying Machine have previously offered variations of half-zip pullovers and sweatshirts. WROGN has brought the construction into knitwear through its Cable Knit Comfort Fit Pullover Sweater, while Allen Solly, Monte Carlo and Jockey have also incorporated half-zip closures into their assortments.
What makes the Fall 2026 shift significant is the breadth of interpretation. The quarter-zip can function as a sweater, sweatshirt, polo, knit top or performance layer, allowing brands to adapt one construction across different consumer segments. Its combination of familiarity, functionality and styling flexibility positions it at the intersection of preppy dressing, sportswear and contemporary casualwear, turning a once utilitarian fastening into a more fashion-led layering proposition for the season.
