In a recent discussion meeting held in Dhaka, Abul Kalam, the leader of the Sammilita Parishad panel, pledged to elevate Bangladesh’s ready-made garment sector exports to US $ 60 billion within the next five years. Currently, the sector generates approximately US $ 42 billion in exports annually. Kalam emphasised that with adequate supply of gas and electricity to textile and garment factories, this ambitious target is achievable.
“If we win the upcoming elections, the Sammilita Parishad will drive the garment industry forward in a planned manner,” Kalam stated confidently.
The event also featured comments from the Managing Director of Chaity Garments, who highlighted that the proposed increase in exports could create 3.9 million new jobs in the sector.
Former BGMEA presidents, including Faruque Hassan, Redwan Ahmed, and Kutubuddin Ahmed, attended the gathering, where Kutubuddin urged members of the organisation to exercise their voting rights and choose capable leaders in the upcoming elections. Another former president, SM Fazlul Haque, acknowledged the significant contributions of BGMEA to the advancement of the garment sector in Bangladesh, while also noting challenges faced due to a lack of cooperation from certain parties.
The BGMEA election board announced that the elections for the organization representing entrepreneurs in the ready-made garment sector will take place on 28th May. The Sammilita Parishad panel was officially declared on 7th October, with Kazi Moniruzzaman as president and Abul Kalam as general secretary, during a view-sharing meeting at the Uttara Club in Dhaka to gear up for the upcoming elections.
