In a bid to strengthen bilateral ties, Russia has expressed its desire for continued collaboration with Bangladesh concerning the state-owned company Gazprom International’s gas exploration activities. The Russian Ambassador to Bangladesh, Alexander G. Khozin, made this request during a meeting with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus at the State Guest House Jamuna on Tuesday.
Since its entry into Bangladesh in 2012, Gazprom has played a crucial role in exploring the country’s gas reserves. In 2023, the company identified five new wells in Bhola for further exploration, a move that has been welcomed by government officials. The Chief Adviser acknowledged Gazprom’s preparations for drilling these wells and confirmed that the Ministry of Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources is actively working on the matter and remains open to further cooperation.
The discussions between the ambassador and the Chief Adviser also encompassed various topics, including trade relations and the burgeoning ready-made garment (RMG) sector. The RMG industry has seen increased interest from Russian companies, looking to tap into Bangladesh’s competitive textile manufacturing capabilities, with the industry looking for alternate sources for gas due to a shortage in availability.
