Facing curfew, tension and uncomfortable conditions day in and day out, the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) Srinagar has shifted its students from its J&K campus to Jodhpur in Rajasthan so that they can continue their studies for the present academic year. In total, 33 students have been shifted mainly from the foundation programmes in fashion designing and fashion communication. The institute is making all efforts to ensure that these students do not suffer and are able to cover up for the time when classes could not be conducted at the J&K campus. Dr. Vijaya Deshmukh, Director – NIFT Jodhpur told Apparel Resources, “This is a make-shift arrangement and students are here till December only to complete their current semester. They are completely happy here as their classes are going on quite smoothly and we are offering them full support in all the ways.”

Extra time and classes are in process for these students as the institute is holding classes on Sundays and in the evenings too. Also, it has been announced that there is no Diwali break from October 29 to November 4, as is the case at other centres, so that the students can cover their lost time and curriculum.
Two faculty and two supporting staff members have also moved to Jodhpur from J&K in order to support the classes. It is being informed that the choice of campus was driven by the adequacy of infrastructure available in Jodhpur enabling accommodation of additional students. Certain quarters meant for the faculty, but unoccupied, have been allotted to these students for study and as hostel rooms. As there are more than 22 girls in this batch, they have been given three quarters for them as hostel rooms. The session across all the campuses of NIFT in the country commences from July 27 and these students were shifted to Jodhpur in mid-September.
