
The apex garment makers’ body in Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association or BGMEA, has called upon the European Union (EU), one of Bangladesh’s biggest trading partners, to continue the existing trade benefits for 12 years after Bangladesh’s LDC graduation in 2026 even as it sought support from the EU for sustainable LDC graduation.
This is as per a statement issued recently by the garment makers’ body.
The BGMEA made this appeal to the EU recently when a delegation of the garment makers’ body called on the Director of Directorate Africa, Caribbean and Pacific, South East and South Asia, Trade and Sustainable Development, Green Deal DG TRADE of the European Commission, Ewa Synowiec, in Brussels recently.
Terming EU a longstanding trading partner of Bangladesh, BGMEA President Faruque Hassan, who headed the garment makers’ delegation consisting BGMEA Vice President Miran Ali, Directors Tanvir Ahmed, Asif Ashraf and Abdullah Hil Rakib, maintained EU is a good friend that has assisted Bangladesh to address various challenges on the way to development.
The statement, quoting Faruque, underlined LDC graduation will pose several new challenges for Bangladesh and opportunities as well, in which the EU can play a key role in enabling Bangladesh to tap the potentials.
