Japanese investors have been showing great interest in Myanmar since the country’s liberalising reforms under president Thein Sein, but are cautious while investing due to a range of problems, mainly related to the country’s infrastructure such as water supply, sewage systems, communications, roads and, railways. Another major problem is of shortage of electricity. The reasons for this growing interest are Myanmar’s rich natural resources, cheapest labour in the region and sharing of border with two of the world’s largest markets, India and China. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has promised low-interest loans worth US $ 813 million for development of infrastructure in Myanmar.
