Despite the intricate web of economic challenges that have tested nations around the world, Japan’s apparel imports have showcased an impressive upswing in both quantity and value, reflecting an encouraging resurgence in consumer demand and economic activity.
In the period spanning from January to May 2023, Japanese apparel imports demonstrated a decent 0.52 per cent increase in weight that amounted to 2.42 billion kgs, paralleled by an impressive 10.78 per cent surge in value that reached US $ 8.75 billion.
These figures not only demonstrate Japan’s resilience in the face of adverse global economic conditions but also underscore the nation’s resilience in maintaining its significance as a dynamic market player in the apparel industry.
This growth signifies a promising reversal from previous stagnation, propelling Japan back into the international spotlight as a thriving hub for global apparel trade, with notable contributions from key Asian exporters as some countries grew both in value-wise and weight-wise exports to Japan, while some only noted growth in their value-wise shipment.
Noteworthy contributors to this upward trajectory include India, Bangladesh, and Vietnam, each with distinct contributions that have collectively contributed to Japan’s expanding apparel landscape.
Indian apparel exports have played a substantial role in Japan’s burgeoning import landscape. The review period showcased a marginal 0.09 per cent increase in the weight of Indian apparel exports to Japan, coupled with a substantial 16.52 per cent escalation in terms of value that stood at US $ 129.46 million.
Bangladesh has also contributed significantly to Japan’s growing apparel imports. While the weight of imports from Bangladesh experienced a 9.32 per cent decline, the value of these imports – US $ 491.87 million – increased by 1.38 per cent.
Although there was a notable 9.42 per cent reduction in the weight of Vietnamese apparel exports to Japan, the value of these exports surged by an impressive 21 per cent year-on-year (Y-o-Y). This dynamic shift in the trade relationship between Vietnam and Japan underscores the latter’s increasing preference for higher-value, quality-driven apparel offerings.
