Union Minister of Tourism, G. Kishan Reddy, said the backbone of India’s textile production will be Tiruppur, since the knitwear industry here accounts for 50 per cent of the nation’s exports. He was speaking at the NIFT-TEA College of Knitwear Fashion in Tiruppur.
India is a major producer of cotton and jute in the world. India is also the world’s second-largest producer of silk, accounting for 95 per cent of all hand-woven fabric.
During a session on ‘Aatma Nirbhar Bharat’ the minister said to the students ,”India’s textile industry is witnessing positive development with a separate ministry for the sector.”
He further added that the PM Vishwakarma Kaushal Samman Yojana 2023 will provide welfare and employment to rural youth across the country and that India will be the greatest economic strength in the world over the next 20 years.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi hopes to increase India’s textile export worldwide. Tiruppur’s contribution is significant in this regard. Foreign business investments are encouraged, and the textile industry is advancing,” he said.
“India will lead the world in textile production, with Tiruppur serving as the backbone,” the Minister also stated.
In value terms, India’s domestic apparel and textile industry contributes approximately 2 per cent of the country’s GDP and constitutes 7 per cent of industry output.
Textile, apparel and handicrafts accounted for 11.4 per cent of India’s total exports in 2020-21. India also accounts for 4 per cent of the global textile and apparel trade.
