India has displaced Indonesia in terms of apparel exports to USA in January to June ’21 period, as per an analysis done by Apparel Resources on OTEXA data.
India currently stands at 4th rank with US $ 2.03 billion worth of garment exports to USA in the first half of 2021, surpassing Indonesia that clocked just US $ 1.87 billion export revenues from US market.
Markedly, Indonesia’s apparel shipment to USA valued US $ 1.81 billion in COVID-19-ravaged first half of 2020, while India could just clock US $ 1.53 billion in its respective shipment.
It wasn’t just last year, but from past several years until last year’s January to June period Indonesia stayed ahead of India in its apparel shipments to USA, even if the gap was not huge!
During H1 ’19 period, Indonesia hit US $ 2.28 billion figure in its apparel shipment to USA, as compared to India’s US $ 2.26 billion export turnover!
On the other hand, in 2021, the lockdowns in India couldn’t severely affect export factories unlike last year when pandemic-inspired lockdowns wreaked havoc across industries and supply chains, while Indonesia is still grappling with challenges such as labour migration and rising raw material costs.
Although the situation in H1 ’21 is in favour of India, it is still uncertain how global market will shape up in next quarter as some countries have already seen third wave and some are even expecting fourth wave of pandemic!
India may see a setback if the third wave arrives that’s been projected to hit in September this year and, if that happens, Indonesia may regain its 4th spot.
