Experts along with the trade union leaders in Bangladesh has recently called upon the tannery owners in the country to implement social and environmental compliances keeping in mind the welfare of the industry and the workers even as they underlined USA and the European Union (EU) were not buying leather from Bangladesh as most of the tanneries in the country were yet to obtain certificates from Leather Working Group, which is an organization of foreign leather buyers.
They reportedly also held the lack of the certificate behind the prices of leather decreasing day by day.
The experts reportedly came up with these observations while speaking at a programme titled ‘Dissemination workshop on institutional policy framework in the Tannery Workers Union’ in capital Dhaka recently even as they reportedly added to obtain the certificates, the tanneries will have to implement social and environmental compliance programmes.
