The amount of cotton procured in Madhya Pradesh by the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI), a central body set up under the Ministry of Textile, has already doubled to 12 lakh quintals from the previous year.
Started in October 2024, CCI began purchasing cotton from Madhya Pradesh farmers at the Minimum Support Price (MSP). In the state, the nodal agency has established 21 procurement centres.
For medium- and long-staple cotton types, the 2024-2025 MSP is US $ 86.84 per quintal and US $ 91.72 per quintal, respectively. Due to lower prices than the MSP, traders said that CCI purchased about 80 per cent of the cotton supplies that made it to the markets this season.
Kailash Agrawal, a cotton trader and farmer, explained that cotton procurement is high this season due to good production and higher per-hectare yields. Unlike in previous years, farmers were eager to sell their stocks early to secure better prices, resulting in most of them releasing their supplies at the start of the season.
