Canada, by far in 2018, has seen no decline in its apparel import values. Continuing the trend, the country posted 5.20 % surge in its value-wise apparel imports during January to May period.
The overall import value was worth US $ 3539 million in the said period as against US $ 3363 million import value in the corresponding period last year.
China, undoubtedly, was the most dominant force during the period fetching US $ 1234 million though dipped marginally by 0.30 per cent on the yearly note. On the other hand, Bangladesh, 2nd in the tally, shipped US $ 440 million worth of apparels to Canada marking 2.50 per cent growth on Y-o-Y basis.
The 3rd in the tally, Cambodia, performed better than last year in its apparel exports to Canada valuing US $ 322.89 million and grew 13.3 per cent on the yearly note. Markedly, Vietnam emerged as the biggest beneficiary as it upped its exports from US $ 270 million from the same period in 2017 to US $ 310 million this year till May posting an impressive rise by 14.90 per cent and booked the 4th rank in top 10 list.
If this surge is anything to go by, it can safely be stated that Vietnam has started capitalising on the benefits the country got from the recently signed CPTPP.
Further, India too noted a profitable period as it upped its apparel exports by 7.20 per cent to earn US $ 149 million. The growth helped India book 5th spot in the top exporters’ list.
Of all major exporting countries to Canada, only USA (US $ 131 million) and Sri Lanka (US $ 66 million) plunged in their respective exports by 6.30 per cent and 4.20 per cent grabbing 6th and 10th rank, respectively in the top 10 exporters tally to Canada.
Indonesia (up 9.90%), Italy (up 23.8%) and Mexico (up 1.20%) too had their own significant share in the Canadian market as these countries tapped US $ 114 million, US $ 112.43 million, US $ 98.41 million in their respective exports of apparels and secured 7th, 8th and 9th ranks in the top exporters list to Canada for the review period.
