
With the view to increase the contribution of the leather industry to Bangladesh’s economy while also generate in five years, 4 lakh jobs, the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation or BSIC has planned to build three more leather industrial estates.
Media reports maintained this while underlining the initiative to build three more industrial estates for the leather sector comes amidst the authorities’ failure to make fully functional the Savar Tannery Industrial Estate.
The reports further maintained the CETP of the Savar Tannery Estate does not have the capacity to process all the liquid wastes produced there, adding this untreated effluent along with other solid wastes is lying in open thereby polluting the environment and the Dhaleshwari River, on the banks of which the industrial estate is located.
