Underlining that delivery of import consignments from private inland container depots (ICDs) or off-docks was taking much longer while also being expensive, garment makers in Bangladesh have sought taking delivery of import consignments from the Chittagong Port directly instead.
Reports maintained this adding the garment makers’ body, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), recently wrote a letter in this direction to the Customs Commissioner of Chittagong seeking full restoration of direct port deliveries even as the Bangladesh Inland Container Depots Association (BICDA) has refuted the allegations against the ICDs.
It may be mentioned here that following recent piling up of containers at the port on account of Eid holidays and the countrywide shutdown due to coronavirus, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) in an office order, reportedly, directed to shift all import-laden containers from the port to the 19 private ICDs on 25 July, in an attempt to improve the existing situation.
